Formation of the off-center bar in the Large Magellanic Cloud: A collision with a dark satellite ?

چکیده

Recent observations on structural properties of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) based on the Deep Near-Infrared Southern Sky Survey (DENIS) and Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) have revealed that the LMC has an off-center bar even in the older stellar populations. Previous dynamical models including tidal interaction between the LMC, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and the Galaxy, however, did not reproduce so well the older off-center bar. We here show that the off-center bar can be formed if the LMC with an already existing bar can collide with a low-mass Galactic subhalo as massive as ∼ 5 × 108M⊙ (corresponding roughly to a few % of the LMC mass). The simulated stellar distribution after the collision appears to show an “off-center bar”, not because the center of the bar significantly deviates from the dynamical center of the LMC, but because the underlying stellar distribution of the disk is significantly asymmetric with respect to the center of the bar. We discuss whether off-center bars observed in Magellanic-type dwarf galaxies can be formed as a result of tidal interaction with low-mass halos with no or little visible matters.

The last Magellanic collision: The formation of the off-center bar, asymmetric HI spirals, and young stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We first present the results of fully self-consistent numerical simulations of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), which show that the last collision between the Magellanic clouds about ∼ 0.2 Gyr ago can form the apparently off-center bar and peculiar HI spirals of the LMC. We also show that the present spatial distributions of young stars with ages less than ∼ 20 Myr in the LM...

The Case of the Off-center, Levitating Bar in the Large Magellanic Cloud

I explore the hypothesis that many of the unusual aspects of the apparent stellar bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud are the result of viewing a triaxial stellar bulge that is embedded in a highly obscuring thin disk. Specifically, this hypothesis explains the observed off-center position of the bar within the disk, the differing apparent distances of the bar and disk, the near alignment of the ...

Triggered star formation in the Magellanic Clouds

We discuss how tidal interaction between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and the Galaxy triggers galaxy-wide star formation in the Clouds for the last ∼ 0.2 Gyr based on our chemodynamical simulations on the Clouds. Our simulations demonstrate that the tidal interaction induces the formation of asymmetric spiral arms with high gas densities and consequently t...

Dark Bulge, Exponential Disk, and Massive Halo in the Large Magellanic Cloud

The rotation curve of the Large Magellanic Cloud, which we have derived from high-resolution HI position-velocity diagrams observed by Kim et al (1998), shows a steep central rise and flat rotation with a gradual rise toward the edge. Using the rotation curve, we have calculated the distribution of surface mass density, and show that the LMC has a dark compact bulge, an exponential disk, and a ...

The So-Called “Bar” in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We propose that the off-centered “bar” in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is an unvirialized structure slightly misaligned with, and offset from, the plane of the LMC disk. The small displacement and misalignment are consequences of recent tidal interactions with the SMC and the Galaxy. This proposal, though radical, is consistent with the kinematics of the LMC and near-infrared star count map...
